Monday I was watching the Inaugural Parade, when my daughter came in and asked what it was all about. I explained that although the presidential election was in November, January 21st is the day he takes office. If it is a newly elected president, the trip from the Capitol to the White House after the inaugural ceremony is literally the time he moves into the White House. The outgoing president leaves the White House for the last time as his home when he leaves for the ceremony. My daughter noted all of the security and the pageantry of the parade and commented on how much that must be costing us taxpayers. She said she understood the purpose of the parade when it is a new President taking office, but why was it necessary for a second term President to have a parade? Ummmm....Good point! Sometimes kids are more practical than we realize.
